DM #451: Even if you rotate them, take care of them, use them exactly as instructed (are there instructions for tires?), they will still get worn down.

What the heck am I talking about? Well, I was rapping with my dude @mw_burke about his elbows, and he dropped this little nugget. Packaged nicely with a smooth southern drawl, might I add. My dude does all the right things. Works on mobility, moves well, warms-up properly, recovers hard, eats right, doesn’t wait for things to be falling off before he addresses them…but his elbows have started hurting. Why? Honestly, because he’s doing a ?-ton of stuff.
—
I assessed him, I analyzed him. Like I said, he’s doing the right stuff. He’s just doing A LOT of stuff. Now, some would argue that he’s then overloading the tissues and doing too much stuff, and THAT’S what he’s doing WRONG. To that I say yes and no. Yes, clearly that tissue is being presented with stress that it’s starting to not be able to handle. But, to say that this is flat out WRONG is a bit complicated. Why? Because we’re treating humans, not tables. Thus, we must take into account wants, hopes, dreams, expectations, and so on. Speak to any high level athlete and they’re going to tell you that they’ve got SOMETHING going on. While I’d love to say that no one should train to that point and all athletes should live happy and pain/discomfort/nagging-annoyingness free…that just ain’t reality. No, you should absolutely not be breaking down all the time. But, ask your body to perform at that high of a level, right at the edge of your capacity (which is often times what it takes to succeed), and those wheels are gonna start wearing down (not to be confused with falling off). —
So, what’s my point? You can be moving right and still experience issues. Don’t assume that you need 89473249 corrective exercises and a completely new training program. Listen to your body. Address the symptoms. Move forward in a smart way. Because, unfortunately, unlike those tires, you can’t just buy a new set.
