DM #472: Want, maybe. NEED? Nah.

Perhaps on a bit of a minimalist trend here, but the pendulum always swings to far, and inevitably it's when it's on its way back and hovering somewhere near the middle that we get the best results. It's always about moderation.

So what am I soap-boxing about tonight? Just trying to remind folks that tools are just that, tools, not essential elements, and should be used as such. Been doing a lot of research for my upcoming presentation with @joelavapt at @RocktTape's RockStock, and the one thing I keep circling back to is the incredible feedback system that is inherently built in to our systems. We buy heart rate monitors to tell us how hard we're working out, and cool watches that tell us that we slept like ? (do we really need a watch to tell us that ?) last night. And while I TOTALLY understand and support it, we can't forget that they are just tools.

Take a step back and simply pay attention to your breathing patterns and you can get the exact same information…for free. Take time to actually listen to your body and you'll know how the food you're eating is affecting you…for free.

I am by no means trying to shame anyone out there who enjoys using wearbles. They can provide some valuable data..but they're exponentially more powerful when used in conjunction with your own awareness. Look at the numbers…and also observe how you feel. The more you pay attention, the more you'll likely realize you don't NEED that thing to tell you about your body, and you can start using it for more important things like social media and texting ?.
