DM #492: Saying this as a patient, not a clinician, so PUHLEASE read the whole caption before commenting ??‍♂️.

Was chatting with my girl @juliavery today (dope post about fixing your deadlift coming tomorrow, so stay tuned for that video) and was inspired to write this DM. If you can’t ‘find’ a movement/muscle, aka you can’t connect with or “feel” that area, there’s no way you can fix it.

If I ask you to stop arching your back so much but you have no idea where your low back is (plenty of people lack this connection and use their low back instead of their hips), there’s no way you’re going to be a able to change the pattern. If I ask you to engage your hamstrings more, but you can’t connect with them…how in the world are you going to complete that task?

This is a concept that we talk about at all of our @rocktape seminars, and how touch (be it with your hands, a tool, tape, a band) is an excellent way to improve that connection, improving your cortical representation of that area ? (decreasing ‘smudging’) and thus improving your movement. Sensory input for motor output. Kinesthetic guidance: Thousands of times faster than yelling at your patients, 30 times faster than showing them.

So, my point? It’s all about connection. Whether you are treating yourself or someone else, figure out a way to make people feel something and you will help them fix that something.
