DM #510: Work. On. Those. Scars.
—
Was listening to a podcast that my girl @primalstrengthdoc did and she brought up this awesome point. Those of you out there who are NKT practitioners already understand the power of scars, but you don't need to be of that school of thought to appreciate the effect that these bad boys can have on the system.

Fascia serves as the scaffolding for the neural network. Introduce an incision into the fascia and you've not only interrupted the fascia…but the neural network. That tissue heals…and both the fascia AND neural circuitry are different. Healing is not synonymous with “normal”.

So, it is not uncommon for our nervous system to seek safety and limit movements that place stress through that area. When these limitations are egregious, we notice them (sometimes) and work on them. But often times these limitations may be a bit less readily identified, instead presenting as delayed or altered firing patterns of nearby (or distant) tissues. The nervous system just wants to feel safe.

So, the point of tonight's ramblings? ? Scars matter. All of them. That appendectomy scar, that ACL scar, that c-section scar, those shoulder arthroscopy scars…they all matter. How much they are affecting the individual is up to you to assess and determine. My goal is just to make sure that you're assessing them in the first place.
