DM #526: Put your money where your mouth is.

Had a great convo earlier today with my guy @thepegphysio, and sent this gentle suggestion his way, and figured I’d make it a DM. What am I talking about? Simply referring to the experience and insight that one gains by doing. There is absolutely an invaluable amount of information to be learned from reading and studying, but putting it into play, direct application, living it…that’s when things start to get fun.

As a physical therapist, I’ve learned the best lessons, and things have been the most certain to stick, when they stemmed from action. I have learned more about movement in the 3 years I’ve done CrossFit than in the 3 years I was in PT school. It has not been CrossFit that has directly taught me these things, but rather, it sparked my interests, I went and researched, then I had a setting in which to directly and immediately experiment.

A while back I was super interested in running and barefoot training. So what did I do? I ran two marathons and a handful of half-marathons. Experience. I hate getting injured, but those times absolutely provide the best learning environments. Experience, understanding, insight.

So, feel free to apply this DM to whatever you’d like, but my intention was really to speak to clinicians, and those seeking better understanding of certain concepts. Go and explore. Wanna learn why climbers need to train their grip? Try rock climbing. Want to learn about breathing strategies needed for heavy lifting? Go find a coach and lift some heavy ?. Reading and discussions will provide excellent information, but first-hand experience…that’s priceless.
