DM #554: The things that can predispose one to developing bunions those things might be genetic. But, bunions themselves, nah.
—
Just what things am I talking about? Dysplastic hips. Ligamentous laxity. They’ll put you at an increased risk of developing bunions if you set the stage, but they by no means guarantee that you’re going to end up with big toes that point in the wrong direction. Just because you flour, sugar, and eggs in your house doesn’t mean your going to suddenly end up with a cake (admittedly, I have no idea what all the actual ingredients are for baking a cake ??♂️). Point is, it takes work.
—
So just what causes bunions? Poorly fitting shoes. Less than ideal gait patterns. Movement dysfunction. Muscle imbalances. The same kinds of things that cause your other issues. Which means, you can help them out. Not saying that you’re gonna get rid of those bunions that you’ve had for 42 years, especially if you’re one of those folks with some ligamentous laxity. But, you can alway help things out. insert shameless plug for the video I posted earlier today with a drill I like to give my patients with bunions ??♂️.

Tonight’s take home? If you have bunions, strengthen the foot, check out the hips, work on the core, work on the hips, check out your ankle mobility, evaluate out your footwear, get your gait analyzed, improve your movement. The list goes on and on. Just, whatever you do, stop blaming your grandmother.
