DM #584: Did I just compare you to a happy meal? ?

Many moons ago I had a convo with my dude @amucurio, and he said that while having a discussion with one of his students, the student genuinely asked “But why would McDonald’s serve me unhealthy food? “ Stay with me here, I do have a point. When it comes to assessing movement and trying to figure out the “why” behind a movement dysfunction, the answer is almost always the same: you’re moving that way because it’s easier and metabolically cheaper.

Yes, the nervous system is always seeking safety, but it’s also economical and seeking to take the path of least resistance. There’s a reason it’s so much harder to gain muscle and get ripped than it is to let that gut grow and put on that winter layer. Muscle is metabolically expensive. Exercise requires effort.

So, when those knees dive inward, that hip drops down, you bend your elbows early when snatching, or whatever less than sexy looking movement occurs, it’s not just happening because your patient/client/athlete is trying to give you a hard time. They’re giving you a McRib.; It’s easier and cheaper than making steak. ?

Take home: it all happens for a reason. If you want to change a movement you gotta put in work so that the new pattern becomes just as easy and efficient. MickyD that sucker.
