DM #601: Word choice, folks. Better cues. Better results.

Day one of PRI in the books and some good stuff being put out there, including this gem from the one and only Skip George. What’s it mean? Pushing your belly out as far as you can while inhaling is by no means an ideal breathing pattern. —
When we’re breathing not only do we want circumferential expansion of the thoracic cavity, we want abdominal wall activation. If your low back looks like a skate ramp (@garagegymgirl thanks for that analogy ?) and you suddenly become 5 months pregnant, you’re doing something wrong.

Clearly the term ‘belly’ breathing isn’t necessarily the best cue. Use what you’d like, just make sure that you’re seeing the patterns that you want and not perpetuating dysfunction.

Take home: as with any movement, be active, be aware, and avoid just hanging out at end ranges. Day 2 coming up tomorrow. Stay tuned!
