DM #606: ?BOOM?! My boy @mobophysio bringing the ?.

Now, you all know that I love me some low threshold stability/motor control drills. I live for ‘em. But sometimes, ya just gotta get stronger. Plain and simple. Sometimes ya gotta ditch the bands and just go pick up some heavy ?.

We are robust. We are resilient. We have instincts and innate tendencies that we need to reacquaint ourselves with. An over-reliance on external correctives speaks to a fragility that I don’t think we have. Yes, there is ABSOLUTELY a time and a place for correctives. I friggin love them. But sometimes, you just gotta get stronger.

Now, when to know the difference is the tricky part, and all too often I see providers telling patients that they have a weak core or weak glutes or something that just isn’t the case. As @paul_the_physio says, the middle of the road ain’t a bad place to be. If you’re spending months and months on a corrective (well, it’s no longer a corrective exercise) perhaps it’s time to look elsewhere and change it up. Conversely, if you’ve been strengthening like crazy and you’re still jacked up, might be time to go in the other direction.

Tonights take home: Don’t let the pendulum swing too far one way or the other. Social media and mainstream movement culture has really championed corrective exercises, and I love that. But, there’s two sides to that coin. Sometimes you need to go out, be a good human, get stronger, and feel better. The end.
