DM #614: This is my brother. He is a loosey goosey. He tells me every day that he needs to crack his back. He does not need that. Let’s discuss.

First off, this isn’t a shot at chiros. I post things, people don’t read the caption, they get offended, and then they DM me mean things. I have nothing against chiros. I have nothing against adjustments. Just be good at what you do, whatever it is that you’re doing. ??♂️

Now that that is out of the way ?, let’s talk about movement. When our tissues don’t provide the reflexive stability that they are supposed to, often times we resort to locking up joints to gain that stability. Ever seen a hypermobile person try to squat and arch their back like crazy? Basically the exact opposite of the buttwink is happening as they arch their back and create that Kim Kardashian shelf while trying to keep their chest up as they squat down. Fake. Stability.

They’ve taken the joints to end range, they’re holding things there for stability, and now they have PERCEIVED tension. This is not a case for working on more extension or cracking your back over a foam roller (@jden816 I’m looking at you), it’s a case for stability.
—
Take home message: I don’t hate chiros and there is absolutely a time and place for joint manipulations. But, if you’re a loosey goosey, maybe, just maybe, think about adding a little stability.
