DM #626: Absolutely love this. A departure from structuralism while still acknowledging that position can matter.

Came across this quote on my girl @natashabarnes’ Insta story, and given my recent posts about our inherent asymmetrical nature, it only seemed fitting that I make it tonight’s DM.

Habits. Yes. Repeated movements, positions, postures. Less concern with the singular idea of trying to fix a structure that is broken…or put something back in…or change that movement pattern just because…or make those two boney prominences be level. Instead, we acknowledge their existence and take them into consideration with the multitude of other things that make a up a human and their behavior and subsequently whatever it is that they are currently experiencing.

Nothing is black and white. Posture. Pain. Movement. Shades of gray. I truly appreciate @greglehman’s approach to biomechanics and pain science, as he’s found a dope way to mix and reconcile the two.

Our assessments show us what people tend to do, not what what we should assume is “wrong” with them. It’s up to us to figure out why they are doing it, and if it even matters as it relates to whatever they’re seeing you for. We’re treating humans, not tables. Don’t forget that.
