DM #653: Stop skipping this step.
—
People are wising up and finally resting their bodies when they get injured…but then they forgot to GRADUALLY work their way back to where they were, and suddenly they find themselves injured yet again.
—
Rest is a GOOD thing. Yes, early isometrics and a more active approach to rehab is generally the right approach BUT, rest isn’t the devil and you MUST let damaged tissues heal. Respect that first step of resting, unloading tissues, and avoiding stuff that makes you feel worse. However, once you feel better, going back at it full force is a recipe for reinjury.
—
Why? Because those tissue aren’t the same. The absence of pain doesn’t mean that that area has returned to its pre-injured state. Additionally, the nervous system remembers that that movement was associated with pain at some point, and as such, we must work to make it feel safe.
—
What am I trying to say here with all this rambling? Simply that when recovering from an injury, after you’ve rested the area you must remember to walk before you run. It’s tempting to throw all the weight back on the bar or just go out for a ten mile run, but your tissues (and nervous system) will respond a whole lot better to a little more gradual of plan.
