DM #705: I could write something profound here, or I could work smarter, not harder, and repost what my dude so eloquently stated earlier today. See below 👇🏾from @_brianmackenzie:

“The cold is not a recovery tool. it is a stressor, or training tool…ones own experience in a cold plunge should be a clear understanding of this, it is not rocket science. you get in and everything in you is telling you to get out, your breath (one of our physiological indicators of feelings/emotions/stress/pain) can’t slow down – you are hyperventilating*. this is also why i really like using a 10 breath challenge in the cold, because it teaches us to control that response sooner. irisin “the exercise hormone” is actually sparked via the shiver response from cold exposure… here we have a hormone that is a response to exercise (a stressor) is expressed through cold stress as well. this is not rest.

__

now, training, even if we fit cold training into this equation creates an adaptive process, or a rebound effect if properly used. one or two of these effects in either case allows for a more efficient metabolic and restful response. when we get really good at a particular type of training or adaptive process we get better at the recovery process as as well, not just stronger and faster. we recover quicker. as a note here, respiration plays a very critical role in how that happens, and ODD as it sounds (I was wrong a few years ago here), but hyperventilating even between hard efforts has shown to NOT be advantageous to the recovery process. what is hyperventilating a response to again? stress.

__

so, if we are looking at cold exposure as a recovery tool, we may just be looking at it incorrectly. we are doubling down on a couple different stress responses in hopes we create one big adaptive process. unfortunately not all can make jumps like this. I see them mostly as separate tools, but I do use them frequently together. and although that may confuse people, think about it like this… if you just train incredibly hard (and or long) it’s probably a real good idea to skip the cold, or even the heat.”
