DM #312: Overheard a convo between two women yesterday while out to lunch with the squad, and I wanted to interject, but didn’t want her to ask me what to do so I chose to keep my mouth shut. ?
To summarize, she was saying how she hurt her back while exercising and so hadn’t exercised for 3 weeks and was worried she was getting fat. Very LA.
Yes, if you hurt your back then sometimes a little bit of rest is the best option initially. But 3 weeks of nothing?!? No, no, no. Figure out why you hurt your back in the first place (poor form, too much volume, whatever) and while you’re doing that, figure out a different way to move and exercise and keep yourself healthy. As DM #53 said: Following an injury, you will NEVER be able to simply rest your way back to full functionality. It just doesn’t work that way.
So, if something hurts you, stop doing that thing, but don’t stop doing EVERYTHING. Keep moving, figure out the why, address the why, then reintegrate that movement pattern. Endless amounts of rest doesn’t nothing to make sure you don’t hurt yourself again, and likely while performing something far less demanding than the original exercise that injured you.
