DM #308: Lots of knowledge bombs from @adamwolfpt this weekend, but this was hands down one of my favorite.
What's it mean? Well, the basic idea is that motion and position are two different things. A joint can experience external rotation without being externally rotated aka, being in an externally rotated position. It becomes important to look at suffixes here. ? If the word ends in -ion or -ing, it's describing a motion. If the word ends in -ed it's referring to a position.
Why does this matter? Well, it can be most helpful to understand this concept from a rehab/injury/pain perspective when a person may have positional “limitations” imposed by post-surgical guidelines or simply because of injury/pain. By understanding this concept we now realize that we can still get that person's joint to experience that motion despite the positional limitations.
So, let this marinate, be mindful of your verbal acuity, and then start implementing it to help out you and your patients. Position and motion are different. Movement is medicine, and with that in mind we now see that you can get your daily dose despite not being able to get into certain positions. Keep those joints healthy, my friends.
