DM #305: SUPER late with this one. Sometimes other things just have to take priority.
Anyway, a few days ago my dudes over at @perfectstride posted the entirety of the study that this quote is from, and I had to share it. As an aside, they do a #PerfectPearls series that is totally worth checking out.
Getting back to the study, it looked at the brain and ACL reconstruction. Now, if you know me, you know that I'm not crazy about studies, but this one was pretty good. The take-home message that I got was that we must do better to re-train and work on the brain following any kind of injury, including ones that require surgery. Remember, when surgery is performed, (yes, sometimes it is warranted and needed), all that gets repaired is the local tissue. That representation of that body part in the brain, does not get fixed.
Now, it can be argued about whether or not the faulty mental representation was there prior to the injury, and is in fact what caused the injury to occur in the first place. Honestly it doesn't matter if it was there before or if it came after. It still needs to be addressed if you want full resolution of symptoms and a decreased likelihood of re-injury.
So, take a message, treat the tissue, treat the human, treat the brain.
