DM #238: Notice I didn't say high-rep, high-speed, or loaded pistols. Those are kinda crazy and I'm not here to argue about or advocate doing those.
A while back I had a discussion with some homies and the pistol squat was referred to as a “party trick”, and I'm gonna have to disagree. I don't think that everyone MUST have a pistol squat, but if you have good movement and full mobility then it's totally appropriate to train. As for being a party trick, I think that we're confusing visibility with difficulty. Meaning, we don't see many folks who can do one, but not because it's truly difficult. But rather, because most people don't move nearly enough, and when they do, they move like ?. I contend that if we were to continue moving with the freedom and frequency of children, performing a pistol squat or training to perform a pistol at an older age wouldn't be nearly as difficult.
However, check yourself before you wreck yourself. If your squat looks like poop and you have the mobility of the tin-man, you have no right to be working on pistols. Pistols are a privilege, not a party trick. Honor your movement.
