DM #233: I absolutely love working on breathing. I assess and address it with EVERY SINGLE person who comes to see me. I feel it’s that important.
But the reality of the situation is that lying on your back and blowing into balloons is going to to provide some carryover to your other activities, but the thing that it will have the greatest affect on is your ability to lie on your back and blow into a balloon. ?
It’s the SAID principle. Specific Adaptations to Imposed Demands. If you want to get better at something, you have to practice doing it. Yes, regress the activity as needed to make the nervous system feel safe and set you up for success. But eventually, you gotta do whatever it is you’re trying to get better at, otherwise all you’re going to get better at is practicing for whatever it is you’re wanting to get better at.
So, work on your breathing, PLEASE! But make sure that you eventually progress things appropriately, get up off your back, and practice breathing while doing whatever it is you’re not so good at doing.
