DM #193: My dude @biomechanicaldetective gave me a sneak peak of his new book, and I picked up this little gem and had to give it a share. If you’re not following him already, do yourself a favor and go check him out. While you’re at it, keep your eyes open next week for the release of his book REAL Movement: A Perspective on Integrated Motion & Motor Control. December 6th, it’s on.
As for the message, I’ve done some past DMs about scars, and the message remains the same: SCARS CHANGE EVERYTHING. If your current intake form doesn’t have a section that asks about the presence of scars, you need to change your intake form. As per DM #101, fascial incisions compromise the neural network. The formation and presence of scars creates not only a structural change in the tissue in that area, but also altered neurological functionality. This means altered firing patterns, and as such, altered tissue functionality.
Say what? Scars can and will affect how muscles fire and function, both from a mechanical and neurological perspective. An ‘active’ scar is one that has a strong connection with the nervous system, which can and will alter the connection that other tissues (both near and far) have with the nervous system. Mind. Blown.
Since I know you’re gonna ask, here are some resources: @stopchasingpain, @davidnkt1951, @anatomytrainsofficial, Leon Chaitow’s work, and any of the work by the Steccos. And of course, make sure you check out Adam’s book when it drops next week. If you’ve got any other suggestions, feel free to leave them in the comments section.
