DM #179: First off, THANK YOU! I hit 14k followers yesterday and have just been so busy trying to figure out how I’m going to get home for Thanksgiving that I haven’t had time to post something clever. So, THANK YOU. I truly, truly appreciate it. Official, sappy post coming tomorrow.
As for tonight’s DM, been meaning to write about this for a while. I’m all about the bigger picture, and keeping things simple to start off with. When you’re assessing someone, go after what jumps out at you first and don’t get so bogged down by the minutia. I’m all about movement, but a static assessment can absolutely provide you with some valuable thinking points and places to start.
Relating to tonight’s DM, I’m talking about that person who comes in with disproportionately HUGE calves, or HUGE quads, or those shark fins for erectors over their lumbar spine. Areas don’t just get big and muscular for no reason. It means that that person is USING that area. Now, if all the areas are big and muscular, then we can move on with our assessment. But areas that just don’t look right, you should be looking into.
Areas with a disproportionate amount of hypertrophy as compared to the rest of the body, are areas that are being preferentially used by that person. It could be because other areas are weak, because other areas are tight, or for whatever reason you uncover. The point is, there’s a good chance dysfunction somewhere else may be being compensated for (or perhaps caused by) overuse of that area.
Gonna try to post a video tomorrow with an example of this, but a theoretical presentation would be the person with beautiful calves whose butt doesn’t work so well. Chicken or the egg? I dunno. But is there a relationship? You bet your ?. Will their movement patterns confirm this? Absolutely. Stay tuned.
