DM #178: Had an absolutely awesome conversation with my dude Jake Hick @mtsjc_movebetter (honestly, all of our convos are awesome) and he dropped this knowledge bomb on me.
Humans are wonderfully complex creatures, and as such, it becomes difficult beyond difficult to measure, interpret, and explain how so many of our treatments work. I’ve stood on my soapbox before and championed the placebo effect, so I’ll spare you the diatribe now. Suffice to say that we’re dealing with a whole lot more than inert tissue, and to think that every effect we have will be measurable is ludicrous.
I’ve made it pretty clear that I’m not a huge fan of studies, and while I do see their value and utility, the point I’m trying to make with this DM is that just because there aren’t a million (or even one) study out there to support an intervention doesn’t mean that it doesn’t work. In my honest opinion, the outcomes of any study just mean that that invention worked for those specific people, under those specific conditions. But, I digress.
@lukemotiv tagged me in a nice post today (give it a look) where he speaks to this same overarching theme that studies are not the be all end all, and in some cases may just be total crap. Don’t be afraid to take a step back and use your brain and look at the bigger picture. Consider the science that is already out there, but never forget that you’re treating a living, breathing, truly remarkable system known as a human. Some things, studies will NEVER be able to capture or prove. And that’s not a bad thing.
