DM #579: The scalpel separates tissues, not our perception of things, and not the movement patterns, good or bad, that we’ve adopted.

All too often I get folks asking me what’s the best stretch or exercise for a single muscle, and my answer is always the same, “Get assessed. It’s never just ONE muscle.” No, not because your level of being jacked up has surpassed the level of an individual muscle; quite the opposite. That nervous system of yours doesn’t understand the concept of a single muscle, and as such, when we explain things to our patients we gotta remember this.

Why does this matter? Because when we go to treat things and get them to STAY away, it’s important that we’re not just constantly blaming and looking at one muscle. Remember, it’s ALL attached. Where one tissue ends another begins. Sure, threat the painful area, but go back and find and address the cause. Spoiler: the cause is never just one single muscle.

So, I leave you with this dope quote from Tom Myers: “While most texts list 600 individual muscles, it’s more appropriate to say there is one muscle poured into 600 pockets of the fascial webbing.” It’s all connected. Assess and treat with this in mind.
