DM #128: Think you can't do something? You're right. Think you can? You're also right.
If you think a movement is going to hurt you, you're going to move differently. If you think a movement is easy, you're going to move better. The nervous system is king. The information you feed to it, which includes your perception of any movements that you're about to perform, will dictate what your nervous system grants you.
For me, one of the most relevant examples of this is Olympic lifting. If I think I'm going to miss, if I think that the bar is heavy, I'm I'm scared to get under the bar, I will NOT hit that lift. It's a simple as that. It can be a weight that I've hit a hundred times before. Doesn't matter. My nervous system doesn't feel safe, and it slams on the brakes.
Additionally, the more complex that you find a movement to be, and the more that you have to consciously think about how you're going to perform it, the more difficult it is to perform the movement. Being in a state of conscious function versus subconscious function, is what separates those people who make things look effortless. As @drmarkcheng says, “When you truly own a movement pattern there is no sign of strain.” You don't perceive that movement as dangerous, or complex, or impossible, and your nervous system is on board. You just do it. You move, and your nervous system allows for it.
