DM #567: That ? is pretty dope. Just sayin.

It's not your fault that we've been made to believe that the muscles and bones are way cooler, and way more important than anything else. The reality is, if you wanna see the muscles, you gotta strip away layers of skin, and fascia…both which are RICH with nerves. Like…filthy stinking rich.

Clearly I'm on a bit of a nervous system kick (though, when am I not? ??♂️), but in preparing for my Blades Advanced class this weekend it was something I was thinking about a ton. It struck me that when it comes to teaching, visual aids are HUGE. Really helps people to learn and remember. And what kind of visual aids regarding the human body have we seen since forever??? Bones and muscles. Heck, we even have a song about the bones! Can't say I've ever heard anyone singing about the lateral cutaneous nerve. ?

What's my point? The nervous system is EVERYWHERE, and yet when it comes to assessment, diagnosis, and intervention, we totally ignore it…because we can't see it. That would be akin to staring at a weather vane that isn't spinning on a windless day and saying that it's not spinning because of the metal it's made of…or rust in the bearings…because we can't see wind.

It's a loose analogy, but I think it gets the point across. I talk a lot about the nervous system, because, well, it's everything. Whether you're a manual therapist, a physical therapist, a chiropractor, a personal trainer, a surgeon…whatever, it wouldn't be a bad idea to start spending some more time looking at pictures of the nervous system. It just might change a few things for you.
