DM #552: “Movement is essential, exercise is optional.” – Frank Forencich

No, I’m not putting down exercise. Slow your roll. Simply trying to provide a little explanation as to why we break down despite the fact that exercise is supposed to be good for us.

Now, even though in the DM I said that we are born to move, I’m not am anthropolgist, or historian, or whoever would know just what it is that we’re truly ‘born’ to do. But, if we adopt #antifragile principles, its easy to see how physical stress as imparted by movement is a good thing, and ultimately helps us. But just as with all good things, too much can be a bad thing. That’s basically what happens when we start to see the repetitive stress injuries and overuse injuries that occur with exercise. Too much of a good thing that has lead to a bad thing.

Our bodies are seemingly designed to withstand and grow stronger from stress. To a point. Hunting and gathering; doing manual labor. It’s intermittent. It’s variable. Good stressors that our body can adapt to and grow from. Running 10+ miles every day, lifting a heavy barbell repeatedly day in and day out…perhaps we might start to break down after a while.

So what am I saying? Stop exercising? NO WAY. We exercise because modern day life inherently limits our ability to be good humans who move as much as they should. Exercise isn’t the devil. I’m simply trying to explain how too much exercise can break you down, and thus, providing a round about way of touting the importance of rest and balance (all my CrossFitters and runners, I’m looking at you ?). Exercise, training, competing. All things that I love. All things that bring with them a more intense, regular, repetitive nature that warrants monitoring. Live your life the way you want, the way that makes you happy. Just remember that everything has a price. Make sure you’re willing to pay it.
