DM #525: Food for thought.

My girl @natashabarnes dropped this in a caption the other day and I thought it was too good to not make it a DM. By no means saying that being stronger is the answer to all your problems, but when it comes to movement freedom, it definitely helps.

One of the biggest issues I see plaguing folks when they're trying to learn a new gymnastics movement is that they simply aren't strong enough. Most of the regressions you see on social media that involve 63837 bands or some intricate setup still really only help you if you have the baseline strength to perform the movement, but just need some help understanding the pattern.

The secret to doing a pull-up? Get stronger. The secret to doing a pistol? Get stronger. The secret to doing a muscle-up? Get stronger. Time and time again I watch people work on drills that ultimately get them nowhere because the drills aren't helping them develop the foundational strength required to be able to perform that movement.

To reiterate, I am NOT saying that if you are strong you will not have pain and you will never get injured. Far from it! (Just trying to head he trolls off at the pass, here ??‍♂️). Simply stating that the stronger you are (and not just as measured by you lifting a barbell), the more movements that become available for you to learn how to do, and ultimately, the more resilient you can train yourself to be.
