DM #515: Say what?
—
If you’ve followed me for any amount of time, you know that one of my favorite quotes is from good ol’ Ida Rolf, and states, “Where you think it is, it ain’t.” Now, for the most part, as it relates to pain and non-traumatic/non-contact injuries, this is the truth. 9 times out of 10, the area that hurts isn’t the problem area. It’s usually something else, somewhere else, that isn’t doing it’s job, and that poor painful area has had to pick up the slack for so long that now it’s barking at you and begging for a change.

But, sometimes, just sometimes, where you think it is, it is. Generally this is in the face of direct trauma (this includes surgery), be it past or present. Meaning, that knee surgery that you had 17 years ago can totally be why your knee is currently hurting, despite the fact that you’re movement patterns are sound. Yes, there can be mechanisms at play that perpetuate your movement dysfunction and likely contributed to why you needed that surgery in the first place, but that joint is now structurally different, and as such, it can be the true issue.

So, what’s my point tonight? Always treat the symptoms, but then go back and address the cause. And remember, that sometimes, just sometimes, the cause might actually be located in the same place as the symptoms.
