DM #501: Specific adaptations to imposed demands. 101.
—
Had a little hall of fame action tonight and I couldn't help but think about some of the more fundamental concepts surrounding athleticism, and what makes an athlete successful. Carryover is a VERY real thing, but at the end of the day, the best way to prepare for a test would be to take the actual test…aka prepare for the thing by doing the actual thing. Same goes for movement.
—
Drills, blocked practice, isolated work, corrective exercises…all super important. But, at some point, the the practice has to look like the performance. Lying on your back and working on breathing will not automatically translate into controlled breathing while sprinting. Slow squats will not automatically translate into explosive rebounding. At some point, ya gotta take it to real time.

So, absolutely break it all down and work on the pieces. But, eventually the practice has to mimic the performance. If you want be fast, you gotta train fast. —
