DM #478: Control that sympathetic response.

I hate the cold. Like…despise it with my entire being. So much so that I moved across the country I hate it so much. But, this hatred/fear/aversion prompted me to do some investigating as to just WHY it was there in the first place. While I continue to search for answers, one thing I did come across were the teachings of @iceman_hof and @iamunscared and the idea of exposure.

Not here tonight to go super in-depth into the science behind cold and heat exposure, but wanted to present this idea of learning how to train our sympathetic response. That flight or fight response that makes you want to run away from wild animals and also stay up all night typing to people you don’t know on the internet, just to make sure that they know that they are wrong and you are right.

It’s all the same. How you respond to that initial threat is absolutely something that can be trained. Physiologically the initial reaction may be the same (that startled breath/feeling when you first submerge yourself) but what happens next…you can control. You can control whether you go into panic/crisis mode, or whether you can take a breath and gather yourself. You can control whether you lash out or stop and take a moment to think. You can control that sympathetic response.

Mike Tyson once said, “Everyone has a game plan until they get punched in the mouth.” Breath training, temperature exposure training, working on mindset…those will allow you to stick to that plan, even after ya take one to the kisser.
