DM #477: Superventilation.
—
I was first introduced to this term by the awesome @iamunscared during his Art of Breath course (do yourself a favor and go sign up), and it’s been a concept that has intrigued me ever since. What does it mean? Basically that we’re breathing too much. Whether it’s driven by the rate or volume, it can absolutely be too much. And this is not to be confused with hyperventilation which is involuntary ?.
—
Why does this matter? Well, I’m gonna give you the 10,000 foot view. Over-breathing has a negative effect on carbon dioxide and nitric oxide concentrations, which in the big picture leads to deceased: ⬇️energy
⬇️mental clarity
⬇️aerboic/anaerboic performance
⬇️oxygenation of muscles and organs
and increased:
⬆️free radical production
⬆️inflammation ⬆️overexertion
Additionally, this pattern of breathing is typically accompanied by mouth-breathing, which amplifies these negative effects and just perpetuates the whole dang cycle ?.

I could talk about this stuff FOREVER, but I gotta save something for future DMs. In the meantime, get yourself a copy of The Oxygen Advantage, check out @iamunscared, and get your tickets to RockStock so you can learn more about this awesome stuff. Oh, and close your mouth. It just might save your life. ?
