Movement, is movement, is movement. Often times high level athletes perform amazingly well DESPITE their imbalances/dysfunction/asymmetries, not because of them. Yes, there are definitely a few cases out there that break the rule and that person does well because they have some sort of genetic abnormality that gives them a biomechanical advantage. Puhlease, let’s not live by the exceptions to the rule.

If a person’s positioning or movement looks “off”, it’s likely off. “Off”, meaning that there is potentially a better way to do it. Breathing is a perfect example. Despite the fact that our physiology (and the studies about it) support the fact that nasal breathing is a much more optimal breathing pattern, we see many top athletes being mouth breathers, and not just during maximal exertion. They succeed DESPITE these less than ideal patterns. Think about how good they’d be if they cleaned that ? up.

So, what’s my point? Just because a high level athlete is scoring lots of points or running really fast doesn’t mean that we should automatically try to emulate them OR use them to ignore our own dysfunction. We are all human. We all have asymmetries and dysfunction and compensatory strategies. Focus on becoming the best human you can be based on a basic understanding of sound movement principles and what feels right for YOU. The same way that you’ve been taught to question what you read on the interwebs, don’t automatically assume that what you see on the sports channel is 100% accurate or correct.
