Most of us get in to physical therapy because our love for movement runs deep. As a practitioner, it’s simple to tell a patient to stop doing the activities that are hurting them. But as a patient, when movement is everything to you, you’ll do whatever it takes to keep at it. To hell with whatever the “correct” path is.
That’s where Dr. Lauryn Ginsberg comes in. She’s been an athlete her whole life, and is no stranger to regular run-ins with her PT. Lauryn became a physical therapist to help other injured athletes, but as her own injuries worsened, she had had to reconcile her goals as a weight lifter and the part of her brain that knows in order to get better, she should stop the activity that means most to her.
Our patients want to keep doing the things that bring them meaning. We may think we know what the “right” treatment plan is, but we can’t forget what it’s like to be on the other side.
