DM #457: Where do I even begin? ??♂️

First off, you really don’t NEED to SMASH your tissues. You could be a whole lot nicer to them and get the same, if not better results. But, if you’re hell bent on smashing, let’s chat about time and place. If you’ve got an injury…that ain’t the time OR the place to be smashing anything. That’s like thinking that a few good whacks from a baseball bat will help heal a shark bite. Whoa…that escalated quickly. A bit exaggerated in magnitude, perhaps, but very much an appropriate analogy. The DM said INJURY, not just pain; implying the presence of tissue damage. Because, as we all know, there doesn’t have to be tissue damage for there to be pain. In this long-? caption I’m simply making the point that smashing tissues to help heal an injury just doesn’t make sense.

When is it appropriate to smash those tissues? Well, again, I really don’t feel that anyone needs to be overly aggressive and produce bruising or pain for a treatment to be effective, but if you MUST, then do it after a licensed professional has giving you the thumbs up. This way you know you’re not just making things worse. —
Why do I even bring this up? Because one of my favorite social media homies attempted to smash away his leg injury prior to squatting…and now can’t lift his leg to put on his underwear. Pain is a request for CHANGE, not punishment. Got some muscle soreness and wanna work it out? Ok, roll, smash, whatever. I ain’t gonna get mad at you for that. Got a nagging injury and/or pain that you can’t figure out? Go and get assessed! Something is going on. Plain and simple. And no, I’m not trying to employ fear mongering tactics or anything of the sort. I get no kick back from you going to see your local provider. I get no thrill from suggesting that you back off for a little bit while you figure out what’s wrong. Just trying to provide a little common sense backed by science and some clinical experience. But, at the end of the day the choice is always yours. Choose wisely.
