DM #446: As my guy @stopchasingpain always says, “Power lives in the transverse plane.” As I have added numerous times, “Glory lives in your ability to control it.”

Let’s think about a ratchet for a second (hands down one of my favorite tools. Yes, I’m that gay). Anyways, the only way that bad boy works is if it’s able to resist the rotational force that you’re imparting as you try to unscrew that bolt. Have that ratchet set the wrong way and all you get is endless spinning and a whole lot of nothing.

Our bodies work in a very similar way. Try to go for a run, and find yourself unable to resist the forces being imparted by your swinging arms, and you’re gonna look like Phoebe. Try to kick a ball and have no solid trunk against which to generate tension and load that leg…Mia Hamm you’ll never be (totally dating myself there).

My point, for optimal functionality, we must not only posses the mobility required for rotation at our joints, we must be able to resist or control that rotation and thus be able to produce torque. Once we can do that…game on.
