MOTM #218: You Get Stronger Every Time You Stand Up with Dr. JPop

Monday, June 8th, 2020

It’s been a hell of a week. To be honest, it’s been a hell of a year… a hell of a lifetime.

After another senseless murder of yet another unarmed Black man—George Floyd—we all collectively decided enough was enough. I’m sure you’re aware of the worldwide protests, and have heard the cry from across all 50 states: BLACK LIVES MATTER.

I knew I had to get Dr. Jennifer Hutton (aka Dr. Jpop) on the podcast. Jennifer may be a Pediatric PT, but in her own words, she is first and foremost a Black woman, and she is committed to doing the work. Fighting against a system that is pitted against you in every way is tireless, trauma inducing work. Jennifer has been speaking out against racism her entire life, so now it’s our turn.

If you are committed to be an ally and committed to anti-racism, you must listen to this episode. We all have to unlearn our implicit biases and how we benefit from systemic racism, and I’m no exception. We need to get comfortable with being uncomfortable. Trust me, it will be uncomfortable, but the work is necessary. So sit down, shut up, and listen. It’s the least we can do.

In This Episode You'll Hear:

  • The deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and so many more
  • A young Black girl’s first run in with the police
  • The fight is outside of just one person—its for us all
  • Listen without formulating a response
  • Always having your guard up as a Black person in America
  • The 5 stages of grief
  • Why keep fighting when it’s so draining?
  • Racism exists everywhere
  • Maintaining hope
  • Get comfortable with being uncomfortable
  • Start with what’s inside of you
  • How to be an ally in the movement specialist space
