DM #351: Shoutout to my boy @bingoryder for inspiring this one. Long story short, the only “easy” surgery or recovery is one that's not yours.

Now I'm not here to be the anti-surgery mascot, I'm simply trying to present the opposite side of the argument, as all to often I see people to under the knife, only to come out not much better than they went in. Same symptoms, same pain, same crappy movement patterns that got them into that mess in the first place. Yes, there are always exceptions to the rule and sometimes surgery is absolutely the best choice, but the belief that the recovery is “easy” should not be the primary driving factor in one's decision to get cut open.

The only thing that truly improves the quality of one's recovery is the quality of the prehab performed prior to surgery. Go in to surgery strong, good range of motion, good understanding of the situation and you're way more likely to come out still having a lot of that in tact. Go in weak, stiff, and without a clue as to what they're doing, why they're doing it, or why you got hurt…well, good luck with that recovery. Remember, surgery for non-traumatic, non-contact issues addresses symptoms, it doesn't fix the cause.

So, if surgery has been presented as a treatment option, by all means consider it. Just make sure that your decision is based on the bigger picture (aka how will this affect you down the road), not just how fast you can be done with PT.
