You might have heard of the military or the prison industrial complexes, but they aren’t the only of their kind. I used to think an industrial complex was just a fancy way of saying a large or pervasive system, but what it really is is a self-justifying, self-reinforcing system. These systems purposely create problems just so they can solve those problems and then—you guessed it—profit off of the demand they created. Gross. Internet marketers aren’t innocent of this. Y’all know I’m all for strategy, but not every little interaction in your business needs to be finding ways to eek more profit out of your audience. We’re better than that.
