DM #698: Truth.
β
Donβt believe me? π€ Just think about what happens when you tell a runner they need to take a break from running ππΎββοΈ, or a lifter that they need to take some time away from the barbell ππ»ββοΈ, or a dancer that they should avoid a certain movement for a bitππ». Complete. Identity. Crises.
β
Many times itβs not until weβve lost a movement that we realize how much it meant to us. How much it was us. How much we want to get it back so that we can return to feeling like ourselves again.
β
I realize that I used sports as an example, but this concept applies to any and all movement. Playing with your kidsπ©βπ¦, gardening, turning the pages of your favorite book π , painting π¨, singing…they are all forms of movement, and when we lose them, we lose a part of, if not all of ourselves.
β
This right here is why we as physical therapists (and whatever your title is) canβt just tell folks to stop doing things when they come to you with pain. Thatβs like saying βjust stop being yourself.β Ainβt gonna happen. We must do better ππ½.
β
Take home: you are how you move. And so are your patients. Help them be themselves.
